DRAGONS DEFEAT McCOOK FOR ACEVEDO TRENT’S 100TH CAREER WIN

McCOOK, Nebraska – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team defeated McCook Community College in four sets on Friday to open the McCook Labor Day Tournament on Friday and gave head coach Dayana Acevedo Trent her 100th career coaching victory.
Hutchinson defeated McCook 25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18 to improve to 2-2 this season. The Blue Dragons later play Amarillo College at the Graff Events Center.
Becoming the head coach of Hutchinson Volleyball in January, Acevedo Trent needed two wins to reach the 100-win mark. Acevedo Trent earned her first 98 coaching wins in four seasons at Odessa College. Win No. 99 was a four-set win over No. 15 Western Nebraska last week in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and victory No. 100 came against tournament host McCook on Friday.
The Blue Dragons were led by outside hitters Atlyn Proctor and Alondra Villanueva against McCook.
Proctor had a team-high 12 kills on 28 attacks for a season-high .321 hitting. Over the final two sets, Proctor had seven kills and hit .278 in the final two sets. Proctor had one solo block.
Villanueva finished with 11 kills on .117 hitting. She had six kills in Hutchinson's wins in sets 3 and 4. Villanueva added four digs.
Jaylynn McNeill had 10 kills on 17 attacks. Freshman middle Mattie Galliher hit .556 with six kills on nine attacks and two total blocks.
The Blue Dragons hit .250 as a team with 46 total kills. They also had five team blocks and six ace serves.
Setter Alexandra Garcia had a season-high 46 assists and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Garcia added two aces and two block assists.
Libero Clara Oliveira finished with 26 digs and three service aces. Lauren Vazquez had six digs and an ace.
Set 1: The Blue Dragons hit .440 in the opening set as Hutchinson rolled out to a 9-2 lead to start the game after a Villanueva kill. McCook went on a 6-1 run to pull within 10-8. A McNeill kill gave the Dragons a 16-7 lead, their largest of the set. With the Dragons leading 22-16, they closed out the set with a McCook net violation, a Proctor solo block and a Proctor kill for a 25-16 win.
Set 2: Hutchinson built an early 5-2 lead. McCook cut the lead to one at 10-9, but the Dragons answered with a 4-1 run to build a 14-10 lead. McCook scored four unanswered to tie the set at 14 and finished the set outscoring the Dragons 9-4 to lead 23-21. The Dragons tried to come back. Kills by Galliher and McNeil got the Dragons within 24-23, but McCook finished out the set with a kill for a 25-23 win to tie the match at 1-1.
Set 3: The third set was tight for most of the set. The Dragons erased a small deficit early one as back-to-back kills from Villanueva and Proctor gave Hutchinson a 7-6 lead. Trailing 9-8, the Dragons scored four in a row to take a 12-9 lead after a McCook attack error. A McNeill kill upped the Dragon lead to 14-10 and a Kierny Follmer kill on a slide gave Hutchinson a 20-15 lead. McCook cut the lead to 21-18, but an ace from Sorielys Dominquez and a double-block from Proctor and Galliher were part of a 4-0 run to a 25-18 set win and a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4: The Dragons had only seven kills in the fourth set, but had two aces and two blocks and took advantage of 13 McCook attack or serve errors in the set. Back-to-back aces from Garcia gave the Dragons an 11-7 lead. A Villanueva kill upped the lead to 16-11. Leading 20-17, McCook made four-straight errors before McNeill's kill ended the match with a 25-17 Blue Dragon win.
