PITTSBURG – Sophomore Jordyn Picolet broke her second school record in as many weeks and led the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team to a strong start at the 2025 Region 6 Indoor Track and Field Championships at Pittsburg State University's Plaster Center.

Picolet was the top Blue Dragon placer on Day 1 of the regional championship. With 5 of 20 events completed, the Blue Dragons are tied for third place with Cloud County with 40 points. Barton leads the team competition with 45 points. Cowley is second with 44 points.

The Blue Dragons and Cloud County are tied for first in the Jayhawk West team standings with 58 points. Barton is third with 50 points.

Picolet placed second in the 5,000 meters with a school-record time of 18:06.64. Picolet broke the 2002 record of Ruth Limo (18:22.46). Picolet entered the race ranked eighth among Region 6 runners.

One week ago at the Ichabod Invitational in Topeka, Picolet broke the Blue Dragon 3,000-meter record.

The Blue Dragons scored 12 points in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Laura Avila placed fifth with a time of 19:24.5. She was ranked 11th among Region 6 runners in the event.

Avila was the leadoff runner for the Blue Dragons' third-place Distance Medley Relay on Saturday. The relay team of Avila, Rio Kerven, Ava Lemaster and Abigail Grantham posted a time of 13:09.86, which ranks seventh in Blue Dragon history.

The Blue Dragons earned their seventh NJCAA Indoor national qualifier on Saturday when freshman pole vaulter Grace Bender cleared a career-best 10 feet. Teammate Alycea McCoy also cleared 10 feet and placed sixth.

The Dragons scored in two other events on Saturday.

Aiyanna Green scored six points for the Dragons with a third-place finish in the women's weight throw with a distance of 49 feet, 5 inches (15.01 meters). That mark ranks fifth in Blue Dragon indoor history. Freshman Deisheline Mayer Scott placed seventh with a throw of 47-2 (14.37 meters).

Freshman Azariah Dawes placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 17-5 (5.31 meters). Yaya Moreno placed seventh with a top jump o f16-11 1/4 (5.16 meters).

Day 2 of the Region 6 Championships begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Plaster Center.
