The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team earned a seventh-straight opening-round bye for the Region 6 Tournament, which begins on Saturday at home sites around the state.
The No. 13-ranked Blue Dragons (25-5) tied for second with Dodge City in the Jayhawk Conferences standings, but lost a tie-breaker with the Conquistadors for the No. 2 overall seed.
The Blue Dragons will receive an opening-round bye and will play host to the No. 6 Colby/No. 11 Pratt winner in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Sports Arena.
If the Blue Dragons can advance to their third-straight Region 6 Tournament semifinal, they will play the Cloud County/Barton-Dodge City winner at 5:30 p.m. at Fleske Fieldhouse in Great Bend.
Hutchinson goes after its 10th Region 6 Tournament championship, the first since 2024.
The Blue Dragons had season sweeps over their potential quarterfinal opponent.
Hutchinson defeated Colby at Colby 64-55 on Jan. 3 at Colby and then knocked off the Trojans 50-42 on Feb.18 at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons dominated Pratt twice, winning 86-47 on Jan. 14 at Pratt and 75-34 on Feb. 28 at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons are 71-39 all-time in the Region 6 Tournament. Hutchinson is 5-0 all-time against Colby in the Region 6 Tournament and 4-0 against Pratt in the postseason.
Hutchinson enters the postseason riding a 10-game winning streak, the 20th win streak of 10 or more games in head coach John Ontjes' 19 seasons as head coach.
