KIPROTICH BREAKS OWN RECORD; DRAGONS 3RD AT REGION 6

COFFEYVILLE – Sophomore Titus Kiprotich broke his own school record in the 10,000 meters Friday night to lead the Hutchinson Community College men's track and field team on Day 1 of the Region 6 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Kiprotich and teammate Cornelius Kogo finished second and third, respectively, in the 10,000 meters to score 14 of Hutchinson's 28 team points on Day 1.

The Blue Dragons are third after 6 of 22 events. Barton leads the men's team competition with 49 points. Cloud County has 41 points. Field events for the final day of competition begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with running events beginning at Noon.
Kiprotich and Kogo were part of an impressive 10,000-meter field. The top seven runners broke the Veterans Memorial Stadium facility record on Friday. Kiprotich and Kogo also became Hutchinson's 22nd and 23rd national qualifiers for the NJCAA Outdoor Championships May 15-17 at Gowans Stadium.
Kiprotich broke his own 10,000-meter school record with an event runner-up time of 30:27.83. That surpassed his original record set at last year's NJCAA Championships in Monroe, Louisiana, by 6 1/2 seconds.
Kogo finished third with a national qualifying time of 20:55.96, the third-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.
The Blue Dragons scored in three other events on Friday.
Elisha Williams placed fifth in the men's javelin with a throw of 167 feet, 8 inches (51.12 meters). Taylor Zehr was eighth at 151-8 (40.23 meters).
Malique Parkinson placed fifth in the long jump with a lead of 22-5 3/4 (6.85 meters).
The Blue Dragon men's 4x800 relay team of Farrin Mangelson, Kiprotich, Leo LeGrand and Kogo placed fourth with a time of 7:51.48, just missing the automatic qualifying mark by .46 seconds.
Two Blue Dragon athletes advanced to Saturday's finals after prelamination heats on Friday.
Kebba Makalo qualified third for the 100-meter finals with a time of 10.37 seconds. D'Antonio Warren advanced to the 200-meter finals with a time of 21.11 seconds.
