KIPROTICH BREAKS 10,000 RECORD; BROWN 7TH IN HAMMER

MONROE, Louisiana – Freshman distance runner Titus Kiprotich got an early start to Day 1 of the 2024 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships and started the day by breaking a Hutchinson Community College men's school record on Thursday.
Running a blistering pace through the first 12 laps, Kiprotich placed ninth on Thursday morning at the University of Louisiana-Monroe's track and field complex.
Kiprotich just missed the awards podium, but posted a Blue Dragon school-record time of 30 minutes, 33.24 seconds.

Kiprotich beat the Blue Dragon all-time and Hutchinson national meet record of Teagan Flanagan, who rank 30:44.63 at the 2021 NJCAA Championships in Levelland, Texas.
This was Hutchinson's fifth school record to fall in the 2024 season.
The Blue Dragons scored their only points on Day 1 in the men's hammer throw when sophomore Christopher Brown placed seventh with a personal record throw of 170 feet, 5 inches (51.94 meters). That throw came on his second attempt in the preliminary round. That throw is the fifth-longest hammer throw in Blue Dragon history.
Brown broke 170 feet in the finals with a throw of 170 feet, 2 inches.
Freshman David Thid, the No. 1-ranked athlete this season in the 400-meter hurdles, qualified for Saturday's finals after Thursday's preliminary round. Thid posted the third-fastest qualifying time of 52.72 seconds.
The men's 400-meter hurdle finals will be at 2:55 p.m. on Saturday.
The Blue Dragon 4x100 relay team missed on qualifying for Saturday's finals, but posted a season-best time and the third-best time in the event in Blue Dragon history. The relay of D'Antonio Warren, Omari Smith, Trenton Bronaugh and Ezekiel Seamster finished 11th in the preliminaries of 40.69 seconds.
Freshman Farrin Mangelson also ran in the 10,000 meters on Thursday morning. He placed 16th in a time of 32:05.78.
Blue Dragon pole vaulters Chris Johnson and Jayce Spencer were getting set to compete on Thursday afternoon, but heavy rain hit the Monroe area around 5 p.m. The event was suspended and will resume at 3 p.m. on Friday.
The Blue Dragon men will have 13 individuals or relays competing on Day 2 on Friday.
Hutchinson is 14th after Day 1 with two points. KJCCC rival Barton leads after the opening day of competition with 24 points. Indian Hills is second with 19 points.
