Marques Townsend joins the Blue Dragon men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2024-25 season.

Townsend came to Hutchinson after serving as an assistant at Butler Community College in El Dorado.

Over those four seasons, the Grizzlies posted a record of 88-34 with a Region VI Tournament championship in 2023. The Grizzlies went 26-9 and lost to Northwest Florida State in the second-round of the national tournament. Townsend helped mentor 11 overall all-Jayhawk Conference players, including three first-team selections.

Before the Grizzlies, Townsend spent four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Southern Mississippi (2015-19) under head coach Doc Sadler. Townsend helped turn the Golden Eagle program around. Overall Southern Miss was 57-74 over those four seasons, but the Eagles went from 8-21 in 2015 to 20-13 in 2019 and an appearance in the CBI postseason tournament.

Prior to Southern Miss, Townsend served as the Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock (2014-15) for one season. The two seasons previous to UALR, Townsend was at the University of Kansas as an assistant video coordinator and student manager from 2012-14.

While at Kansas, Townsend collaborated with coaches and managers in producing scouting reports, helping the Jayhawks to 56 wins in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He handled the bulk of the staff’s video responsibilities, filming each game and producing digital and DVD copies for coaches, opponents and officials.

Townsend was a member of the Lassen College men's basketball team from 2003-05. Playing for head coach Fred Chmiel, Townsend helped the team to a Golden Valley Conference title and the California Community College Playoffs in 2004.

A member of the United States Navy from 2008 to 2012, Townsend was born on April 2, 1985 in San Jose, California. He graduated from Natomas High School in Sacramento, California in 2003. Townsend earned his BA in Communication Studies in 2014 and earned his master’s in Sports Administration with a concentration in business from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 2022.

Townsend and his wife, Aspen, have five children: Jeremiah, Jayleigh, Jaiyah, Adeya and Jett.
