Hutchinson CC Sports Information
With 5 of its first 7 games at Gowans Stadium and the next home game for the Hutchinson Community College not until the calendar turns to November, the No. 4-ranked Blue Dragons open a very important road trip on Saturday.
Hutchinson (6-1, 4-0 KJCCC) travels to Coffeyville (2-4, 1-3 KJCCC) at 7 p.m. Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville.
The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and sister station KWBW-AM (1450) beginning at 6:30 p.m. with Countdown to Kickoff. Rusty Hilst (play-by-play), Rob Dreher (analysis) and Glen Grunwald (sidelines) will call the action. The game will also be videostreamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network with the link available at 6:50 p.m.
The Blue Dragons own a one-half game lead over No. 2 Garden City for first place in the Jayhawk Conference. Before a November 3 showdown with the Broncbusters at Gowans Stadium, the Dragons must navigate 2-4 Coffeyville and 3-4 Dodge City. The Dragons have a bye week on October 27.
Hutchinson remained unbeaten in conference play with a thrilling 16-13 victory over No. 13 Highland last Saturday at Gowans Stadium. The Blue Dragons are now 3-1 this season against nationally ranked opponents.
After Highland tied the game at 13-all with 1:55 to play, the Blue Dragons drove 60 yards in six plays and freshman kicker Sebastian Garcia kicked a go-ahead 37-yard field goal with 15 seconds to play in the game.
The big loss from that victory was the ejection and subsequent one-game suspension of Hutchinson head coach Rion Rhoades.
Coffeyville enters Saturday's game on a three-game losing streak following a 22-21 loss at Dodge City where the Conquistadors scored 10 points in the final 2 minutes to pull off the comeback.
Last season, the Blue Dragons pulled off the biggest comeback in program history against the Red Ravens. Hutchinson trailed Coffeyville by 25 points just 20 minutes into the 2017 season opener and rallied to win 50-42.
Hutchinson's No. 2 nationally ranked rushing defense will receive another strong test from the Jayhawk Conference's third-best rushing team in the Red Ravens. Coffeyville rushes for 180.8 yards per game this season, while the Blue Dragons are allowing a scant 33.3 yards per game and 1.0 yard per rush. Five of 7 opponents have rushed for less than 50 yards.
