Bio

Former two-sport Hutchinson Community College star Deron McCue is in his third season as a Blue Dragon assistant coach.

The 2023 season saw the Blue Dragons set a school single-season record for wins in a 51-13 season in which the Dragons captured the Jayhawk West championship, were Region VI runners’ up and ranked No. 10 in the final NJCAA national rankings.

The 2022 Blue Dragons went 30-28 and placed fifth in the Jayhawk West.

McCue was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and after his playing career was over, spent several seasons in the Giants’ minor league system as a coach.

He eventually returned to Hutchinson where he went to work for Dillons and in 2010, he started working as an assistant coach for the Hutchinson Monarchs summer league baseball team. Midway through the 2011 season, McCue took over as head coach and he stayed in that position until the end of the 2022 season, finishing with 321 wins and nine NBC World Series appearances.

Before then, McCue spent his formidable years climbing the ranks in the San Francisco Giants organization, reaching as high as the Triple-A level. He later became a coach in the Giants’ organization.

McCue was a football star at Hutchinson High before coming to Hutchinson Community College and having a stellar career as a cornerback.

As a Blue Dragon, McCue was a 1982 NJCAA football All-American and was the Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

McCue wasn’t too shabby in baseball either. A center fielder, McCue was an all-around player. He was a good defensively and a top hitter who had speed on the bases. Like in football, McCue was an all-conference player.

McCue was drafted 15th round by the San Francisco Giants as an outfielder in 1983. He played six years in the minors, making it to Triple A as a utility player and he played with future big leaguers Will Clark, John Burkett, Kurt Manwaring and Charlie Hays.

He also managed and coached within the Giants organization for three years after the completion of his playing career, serving as the hitting coach in Clinton, Iowa, managing at Everett Washington and managing at Pocatello, Idaho.

McCue also coached at Nickerson High School for sixth seasons. The 2019 Panthers won the Kansas Class 4A State Tournament, winning all three games on the road to the title in one day.

Deron and his wife, Debbie, have three children: Amanda, D.J. and Haley.
