EDMOND, Okla. – Freshman Luke Sartori posted the Hutchinson Community College baseball team's first five-hit game since 2017 to lead the Blue Dragons to a run-rule victory over the Redlands Cougars in their second game Friday of the UCO Juco Festival.
The Blue Dragon bats woke up against Redlands in a 15-4 victory in a run-rule game that went seven innings. The Dragon bats were slumbering in a 9-2 loss to Crowder College earlier on Friday.
Now 3-1, Hutchinson will play NEO at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday to close out the UCO Fall Festival.
REDLANDS RECAP
Sartori went 5 for 5 with five RBIs and three doubles to leads the Blue Dragons against Redlands.
Sartori doubled and scored in the first inning. He singled, stole a base and scored in the third. Sartori doubled in both the third and fifth innings, scoring in the fifth and he closed out his performance with a single through the left side.
Sartori had Hutchinson's first five-hit game since April 14, 2017 when Bobby Morgensen went 5 for 5 against Garden City at Hobart-Detter Field.
All told, the Blue Dragons racked up 12 hits against five Redlands pitchers.
Britton Mulhern went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Mason Lowe also had 2 hits with two runs and an RBI. Tyler Delong drove in two with a double. Cade Argo also had a double.
Sophomore pitcher Brian Skillman (1-0) had a career-high nine strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings to earn his first win of the season. Skillman allowed just two hits and walked five with four runs, only one earned.
L.J. McDonough pitched 1-3 inning with a strikeout. Freshman Caden Pouge struck out three and walked one in his Blue Dragon debut. He allowed just one hit. The three Blue Dragon pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.
Redlands had just three hits against the Blue Dragons.
The Blue Dragons scored six runs in the first inning. Sartori scored on a passed ball. Delong drove in two runs with a double, Mulhern had a two-run single and Mason Lowe had an RBI double. Argo's RBI double in the second made it 7-1 Hutchinson. Sartori's two-run double made it 9-1 after three innings.
The Dragons were a pitch away from getting out of a fifth-inning jam, but Redlands scored three unearned runs to cut the Dragon lead to 9-4.
Hutch exploded for six more runs in the fifth inning to break the game open and post its third run-rule victory of the season.
CROWDER RECAP
Crowder College hit three home runs in the first three innings to hand Hutchinson its first loss of the season. Crowder pitcher Jared Viertel threw 5 2-3 innings with five strikeouts help hold Hutchinson to a season-low three hits.
Crowder touched Blue Dragon starter Dawson Linder (1-1) for five runs, five hits and three homers in two-plus innings. Ethan Peterson worked 3 1-3 innings and Cody Farmer worked one inning. Hutch pitching combined for 10 strikeouts, but they allowed nine runs, nine hits and three walks.
A six-run third inning broke the game open for Crowder. Hutchinson finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth. Austin Callahan had a two-out double to score Mulhern and Sartori which cut the Crowder lead to 7-2.
Lowe, Sartori and Callahan had the only Blue Dragon hits, but the Blue Dragons had 12 baserunners in the game. The Dragons left seven runners on base.
