Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College women's cross country team posted its lowest team score since its national championship year of 2001 on Friday to open the 2018 season in front of the home fans.
The Blue Dragons placed six runners in the Top 10 and ran away with the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic team championship at Fun Valley.
Hutchinson scored 25 points on Friday night, easily distancing itself from second-place Dodge City, which had 57 points. Pratt was third with 62 points and McPherson College was fourth with 91 points.
This is the first team championship for the Blue Dragons since 2012 and the 25 points is the lowest team score in a non-dual meet in 18 years.
Later on Friday night, the Blue Dragon men won the Masterson Twilight title marking the first time that Hutchinson swept a non-dual meet for the first time since the Blue Dragons captured both women's and men's titles at the 2005 McPherson College Invitational.
As much as the team championship wasn't in doubt, the individual championship came down to the wire.
Hutchinson freshman Lisayo Ewoi and Pratt's Aminata Kenyawani were stride-for-stride throughout the 3-mile excursion under the lights at Fun Valley. It looked like Ewoi was starting to pull away in the final quarter mile, but with about 20 yards to go; Kenyawani surpassed the Hutch runner to take individual honors by 0.7 second.
Ewoi ran a time of 18:32.8 to finish as Hutch's top runner. There were plenty of Blue Dragons right behind her.
Sophomore Aileen Gomez placed fourth overall with a time of 19:49.4. Freshman Gabby Collins played fifth in 19:55.5 and sophomore Sarah Patteson placed sixth in 19:58.6. Sophomore America Garcia was the fifth Blue Dragon to score. She was eighth in 20:20.0
Sophomore Saw Ahmara was the sixth Blue Dragon to place in the Top 10 with a 10th-place finish in 20:41.7.
The Blue Dragons next run in two weeks at the Missouri Southern Stampede on Sept. 15 in Joplin, Missouri.
