Hutchinson Community College's Maggie Lambert continued her strong freshman season by earning All-Region VI Cross Country honors on Saturday at the 2016 Region VI Championships at Westar/Prairie Ridge Park.
Lambert finished 13th overall in the 99-runner field to lead the Blue Dragons to a seventh-place showing in the Region VI Standings. The Blue Dragons finished fourth in the Jayhawk West standings.
Lambert didn't quite get to her third sub-20 minute race of the season, but she turned in the top Blue Dragon performance on Saturday with a time of 20 minutes, 11.07 seconds on the tough home course of the Blue Dragons. That was the fifth-fastest time among Jayhawk West competitors.
Finishing within the Top 15 earned Lambert All-Region VI honors. Finishing within the Top 7 of the conference race earned the Blue Dragon freshman all-Jayhawk West honors.
Sophomore Hannah Heidebrecht placed 18th in the region with a time of 20:19.45. She was 10th in the Jayhawk West.
Sophomore Leah Nelson was 50th in the region on Saturday with a time of 21:49.62. She was 27th in the conference.
Freshman Lindsay Sowersby was right behind Nelson in 51st with a time of 21:50.07. Sowersby was 28th in the conference.
Freshman Vianny Sierra placed 79th in the region and 42nd in the conference with a time of 24:00.94
Cowley's women captured the Region VI women's team championship with 63 points, just seven points ahead of Allen. The Blue Dragons scored 186 points.
Colby claimed the Jayhawk West women's team championship with 40 points. Dodge City was second, Butler third and the Blue Dragons fourth with 98 points.
Colby's Winnie Kibet earned the regional and Jayhawk West individual championship with a time of 18:28.54.
The Blue Dragons next compete at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 12 in El Dorado.
