From 2005 to 2015, the biggest women's soccer rivalry in the Jayhawk Conference was Hutchinson vs. Butler.
Saturday's opening round of the Region VI Tournament will see the renewal of that rivalry after a four-year hiatus. Hutchinson (12-3) will play host to Butler (11-5-1) at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The Blue Dragon Sports Network will provide a live video stream of the match.
The Blue Dragons earned a home-field game after finishing second in the Jayhawk West. The Grizzlies were the No. 3 seed out of the Jayhawk East. The Hutchinson/Butler winner will play the Cowley/Dodge City winner October 31 at the highest remaining seed. Hutchinson is seeded third in the tournament with Butler No. 6. Cowley is the No. 2 overall seed and Dodge is the No. 7 seed.
The overall series between Hutchinson and Butler is 9-9. Seven of those meetings have occurred in the postseason, the last in 2014. Hutch is 4-3 against Butler in Region VI matchups.
The Blue Dragons have outscored their opponents 73-6 this season with 12 shutouts.
Three different Dragons have 10 or more goals – Samantha Vaughn (16), Esther Karhayu (12) and Naomi Waithira (10). Waithira is second in the KJCCC with 16 assists. Freshman Marah Franke has 13 helpers this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Chiara Soergel is the nation's leader in assists with 12. She is 12-3 with a 0.40 goals-against average and an .867 save percentage. Soergel had 39 saves this season.
The Grizzlies have scored 33 goals and allowed 18.
Rachel Wolecki and Sandra Thiman are tied for the team lead in goals with six each. Alyssa Stewart has five. Maizi Garwood has a team-high six assists.
Lexi Winkle is Butler's No. 1 goalkeeper. She is 10-4 with four shutouts. Winkle has a 0.99 goals-against average and an .833 saves percentage. She has made 65 saves this season.
