Monday opened the 12th season for Hutchinson Community College women's basketball for head coach John Ontjes.
"I am as excited about this season and I was the first," said Ontjes, who carries a record of 314-69 into the new season.
The Blue Dragons return five players from last season's NJCAA Tournament at-large qualifying team. The 2017-18 Blue Dragons were 27-7 last season.
"Out of the five, four started last year which is promising," Ontjes said referring to forwards Jada Mickens and Dejanae Roebuck and guards Tia Bradshaw and Sara Cramer. "I think we have a good class coming in. Our freshmen are players who will push our returners and will fight for a starting position."
The Blue Dragons will have seven total sophomores on the roster this season. Tijuana Kimbro was injured and missed all of last season. Makayla Johnson is a transfer from Louisiana Tech. Five true freshmen will also be on the 2018-19 roster.
Mickens and Roebuck were bookend forwards for the Dragons last season. Mickens (6-foot, Liberal, KS) averaged 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds. Roebuck (5-11, Olathe, KS) averaged 13.0 points and 9.1 rebounds. Cramer (5-5, Dighton, KS) was Hutch's top 3-point threat from last season. She averaged 8.4 points and shot 39 percent from long distance. Bradshaw (5'8, Dodge City, KS) averaged 5.8 points and 3.9 assists as the point guard. Reserve guard Kelsey Brett (5-10, Adelaide, South Australia averaged 4.7 points and shot 40 percent from long range.
"We will have more size this season," said Ontjes, whose roster has six players listed at 5-10 or taller.
The Blue Dragons will open the 2018-19 season on November 1 at 6:30 p.m. against the Bethany College JV. The Blue Dragons will also play host to a holiday tournament in late December.
