HOBBS, NM – Hutchinson Community College distance runner Andrew Kibet continues to rake in the accolades for his memorable freshman season on Wednesday night.

Kibet and Blue Dragon assistant track and field coach Justin Riggs earned Central Region honors at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor National Track and Field banquet in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Kibet was named the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) Central Region Male Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season. Riggs was named the Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year for the outdoor season.

Kibet is in the nation's Top 10 in three different events this outdoor season, ranking No. 1 in the 1,500 meters. Last week at the Region VI championships, Kibet posted the ninth-fastest time in NJCAA history at 3:47.89. Kibet is fourth in the 800 meters and ninth in the 5,000 meters.

In the falls season, Kibet was the NJCAA national cross country Individual champion.

Riggs is Kibet's cross country head coach and his distance coach for the Dragon track team. While, Kibet has gained much notoriety this season, Riggs has produced quite a group of distance runners. Riggs has a combined 12 entries for the distances races for the 2019 national championships. From that group, Riggs' runners have four national Top 10 rankings.

Riggs led the Blue Dragon men's cross country team to the 2018 Jayhawk West and Region VI team championships.

On Thursday, Hall of Fame Blue Dragon track and field head coach Pat Becher begins his 34th and final NJCAA national championship with several athletes competing on Day 1.

Competing on Thursday for the Blue Dragon men are:

+ Myles Hansen will go in the pole vault. He is ranked No. nine in the NJCAA with a top performance of 14 feet, 7 3/4 inches.

+ The Blue Dragon men's 4x100 relay will run its preliminary heat. The Blue Dragons are ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA with a time of 40.54 seconds.

+ Sophomore Jared Stark will compete in the 10,000 meters. His top time this season is 32:06.66, which is 11th in the NJCAA.

+ The Blue Dragon 4x800 relay will run its final. Hutch is ranked 12th in the NJCAA with a time of 7:47.85

+ Elijah Fisher competes in the long jump. He is ranked 14th with a jump of 23 feet, 10 inches.

Hutchinson's women's athletes competing on Thursday are:

+ School record holder Hannah Smith will compete in the hammer throw. Smith is third in the NJCAA with a throw of 173-4.

+ Casey Summer will compete in the pole vault. She is ranked sixth in the NJCAA with a clearance of 10-11 3/4.

+ Jewel Bolden goes in the long jump. Bolden is seventh at 19 feet, 6 inches.

+ Hutch's 4x800 relay runs a final. The Dragons are ranked No. 12 in the nation with a time of 9:55.08.

+ The Dragons will also run a preliminary heat of the 4x100 relay. Hutch is ranked 13th in 48.17
