EL DORADO – The opening day of the 2019 Region VI Outdoor Track and Field Championships was a slow one for the Hutchinson Community College men's team on Friday.

The Blue Dragons scored in 3 of 6 completed events and are sixth with 18 points after Day 1. Cloud County leads the team standings with 59 points. Barton is second with 38.

Hutchinson's top finish was freshman Elijah Fisher in the long jump. Fisher placed second with a leap of 23 feet, 6 3/4 inches.

All-American Anthony Gallardo, who leads the NJCAA in the javelin this season, finished third in the regional championships on Friday with a throw of 192 feet, eight inches.

The Blue Dragon men's 4x800 relay team of Brett Hillabrand, Connor Kaufman, Tony Ibarra and Jason Luft placed fifth in the region on Friday with a time of 7:51.21.

Action resumes on Saturday at 10 a.m. with field events and Noon on the track.
