MELBOURNE, Fla. – Freshman Charlie Herbert remains in contention for a Top 10 individual finish, but the Hutchinson Community College men's golf team overall had a very tough Thursday at the NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at Duran Golf Club.
Herbert is tied for 14th individually, but the Blue Dragons dropped five spots in the team standings to 15th after a third-round 303.
The Blue Dragons had to count Herbert's 74 (+2), Nathan McCulloch's and Lake Leroux's 75s (+3) and Peyton Austin's 79 (+7). Freshman Charlie Crockett wasn't able to post a score because of a scoring technicality after the round was complete. Crockett shot 73 in the third round.
The Blue Dragons are now 889 after 54 holes and are in 15th places, just one stroke ahead of Garden City. Hutch is 17 strokes out of 10th place with one round to complete on Friday.
Herbert is tied for 14th place individually after a 2-over 74 on Thursday. He is at 3-under 213 for the championship.
Herbert looked to be closing stroke, pulling his third-round score to level with a birdie on No. 16. But trouble cropped up on the par-3 17th hole and Crockett took a double-bogey five on the hole.
McCulloch is now tied for 73rd in the individual standings at 10-over 226. Austin is tied for 85th at 14-over 230. Leroux is tied for 88th at 15-over 231.
The overall team race is tight with District III rival Indian Hills holding a one-shot lead over Central Alabama and five-shot lead over New Mexico Junior college entering Friday's final round. Indian Hills had a 284 on Thursday for a 54-hole team total of 835. Central Alabama climbed back into team contention with a 273 on Thursday.
Central Alabama's Jack Pool shot a 6-under 66 to take the individual lead at 12-under 204. New Mexico's Andrew Ni and Midland's Callum Bruce are just one shot behind at 205.
Hutchinson will be paired with Jayhawk Conference rival Dodge City and Wallace State in Friday's final round with tee times from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m.
