AMARILLO, TX – Freshman Charlie Crockett had a sensational debut for the Hutchinson Community College men's golf team on Monday.
Crocket carded rounds of 67 and 68 to finish Day one of the West Texas A&M Ryan Palmer Foundation Classic at 7-under through 36 holes. Crocket is alone in second place after Day 1 at the Par 71 Tascosa Country Club with the final round starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Blue Dragons are in sixth place after 36 holes at 1-under 567. No. 8-ranked Hutchinson had rounds of 280 and 287 on Monday. The Blue Dragons were just six shots off the team lead after 18 holes and now trail St. Mary's (TX) by 13 strokes after two rounds. The Dragons are playing against primarily an NCAA Division II field.
Crockett's first round as a Blue Dragon was a 4-under 67. Crockett's round featured two eagles, four birdies and four bogies. Crocket's second round had five birdies and two bogeys.
Crockett trails individual leader Emilio Gonzalez of St. Mary's by two strokes.
Another Blue Dragon freshman matched Crocket with an opening-round 67 on Monday.
Charlie Herbert had five birdies and just one bogey in his debut round for the Dragons. Herbert, Crockett and six others were tied for third place after one round. Herbert a 3-over 74 in the afternoon round and is currently tied for 17th at 1-under 141.
Freshman Nathan McCullough is tied for 26th at even-par 142. McCullough fired rounds of 1-over 72 and 1-under 70 on Monday.
Freshman Peyton Austin is tied for 59th at 7-ver 149 after rounds of 74 and 75.
Freshman Cameron Probert was the fifth Blue Dragon eligible to score. He is tied for 73rd at 11-over 153 after rounds of 76 and 77 in the first two rounds.
J.T. Engelbart is playing as an individual in this tournament. Engelbart is tied for 73rd at 153 after rounds of 74 and 79.
