Hutchinson Community College men's basketball coach Steve Eck opened the 2018-19 season on Monday with the first practice of the new season.

What he didn't see were many faces that helped the Blue Dragons advance to a fourth-straight NJCAA Tournament one year ago.

Only forwards James Rojas and Rheaquone Taylor were on the floor for Eck last season when Hutchinson posted a 29-7 record and advanced to the second round of the 2018 NJCAA Tournament.

Eck will have 12 freshman and one sophomore transfer when the team plays the first of its four preseason scrimmages this Saturday in Dallas at the Jerry Mullins Classic.

"All the13 new guys are energized and enthusiastic," said Eck, who is the program's all-time leader in coaching wins with 260. "They are competitive and they get after it. Rheaquone and James have been helping the big guys and trying to be good leaders."

Rojas (6-foot-8, 215 pounds, Jamestown, NY) averaged 10.6 points and 4.9 rebounds. Taylor (6-7, 215, Jamaica, NY) averaged 6.6 points and 5.0 rebounds. Guard Sequan Singleton was a redshirt last season.

The Blue Dragons open the 2018-19 season at home against Northeast Nebraska and NEO on November 2 and 3, respectively. The Blue Dragons will also have one preseason scrimmage at home, that on October 18 at 6 p.m. against Sunrise Prep Academy.
