Now in her second season, Kala McElhaney was hired in July 2018 to take over the Blue Dragon Spirit Squad.

McElhaney, a native of Claremore, Oklahoma, comes to Hutchinson from Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas. McElhaney was Neosho County’s cheer and dance assistant coach for two seasons before being promoted to head coach for the 2017-2018 season.

McElhaney’s first cheer squad finished second at the 2019 Region VI Championships.

The former Kala White’s coaching history isn’t all tied to cheer and dance.

She was also an assistant softball coach at Labette Community College, where she also cheered and played softball. White also was a cheerleader at Pittsburg State University. That cheer program finished fourth in the nation in 2013 at the National Cheerleading championships.

McElhaney was a student assistant coach for two seasons at Labette (2013-15) before moving to Neosho County.

McElhaney’s 2017-18 Neosho County squad was well recognized after the Panther cheer squad finished second at the Region VI Championships and the dance team was sixth in Region VI. Neosho County also finished seventh at the NCA Nationals in the intermediate junior college division.

As a Labette softball player in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, McElhaney hit .264 as a freshman with 22 runs, 33 hits and 12 stolen bases. In her sophomore season, she it .307 with 17 runs, 43 hits and seven stolen bases.

Kala is married to Taylor McElhaney.
