Third-year sophomore safety Dominique Terrell was named the Verizon/Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Terrell, a 5-foot-10, 188 pound safety who played in high school at Wichita Northwest, was a major part of a huge defensive effort then carried the 12th-ranked Blue Dragons to a 37-14 victory at Fort Scott on Saturday.
Terrell had a career high 12 tackles and had his first interception of the season to lead a defense that stymied the NJCAA’s No. 3 rusher in Stanley Hagen, holding him to 40 yards on 22 carries. His interception was one of six takeaways by the Blue Dragon defense.
Terrell is the ninth Blue Dragon to earn Jayhawk Conference weekly honors this season.
Terrell has made a tremendous comeback from a season-ending injury he sustained in the first quarter of the 2011 season opener.
Verizon and the Jayhawk Conference are in the third year of a partnership to honor the Jayhawk Conference’s weekly Players of the Week.
Terrell is now eligible for NJCAA national player of the week. That award will be announced on Wednesday.
