
The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team survived a Jayhawk West season-low hitting percentage to sweep Dodge City 25-22, 25-15, 25-19 on Monday night at the Sports Arena.
The victory was Hutchinson’s eighth in a row, its longest winning streak since 2009. The Lady Dragons (18-5) remained perfect in the Jayhawk West at 10-0 heading into Wednesday’s key conference road match at Seward County.
The Lady Dragons had their lowest hitting percentage of the conference season of .130 against the Conquistadors. That’s the second-straight match and sixth match overall this season that Hutchinson has hit less than .200 this season.
Freshman Teresa Wade and sophomore Jade Nelson had eight kills and five block assists each to lead Hutchinson offensively. Wade added seven digs.
Sophomore Gabby Rushton had four kills and a match-high eight blocks (two solo, six assists).
Sophomore setter Ashlyn Westerman had her second-straight and fourth overall double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Scout Heizer had 13 assists.
Freshman libero Samantha Lackey had a team-high 13 digs.
Chantal Birbaum had seven kills to lead Dodge City.
Hutchinson hit just .167 in each of the first two sets and .094 in the third set. The Lady Dragons had 11.5 team blocks and 46 total digs. HCC out-hit Dodge City 31-21 and out-blocked the Conquistadors 11.5-10.
The Lady Dragons sweep the season series with the Conquistadors.
Hutchinson will meet second-place Seward County at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Seward County’s Green House.
