The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team passed its first true test of the season on Saturday against No. 19 Johnson County to remain unbeaten and stay No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Soccer poll for a second-straight week.
Last week, the Lady Dragons earned their first-ever No. 1 national ranking and maintained it through this week’s poll with Jayhawk Conference victories of 5-0 over Pratt, 3-2 over No. 19 Johnson County and 2-0 over a very good, but unranked Barton team 2-0 on Tuesday.
Once again, HCC garnered four of the five first-place votes and has a narrow two-point lead over second place Tyler Junior College. 98-96.
In fact, the top six teams in the poll all stayed the game. Following Hutchinson and Tyler were Brevard, Paradise Valley, Iowa Western and Butler.
Johnson County, despite the 3-2 loss to Hutchinson for its third loss of the year, moved up four spots to No. 15.
Hutchinson started the season ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll, but shot up to No. 3 before attaining its current status last weekend. HCC has now been ranked in eight consecutive polls, the longest run in the national poll in team history.
HCC will next play at Allen at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Iola and at Garden City on Sept. 26. The Lady Dragons’ next home game will be Oct. 3 vs. Cowley College.
