Hutchinson Community College sophomore running back Terrell Lane capped an extraordinary performance on Saturday by being named the NJCAA’s National Offensive Player of the Week for Week 3.
Lane was huge in No. 14 Hutchinson’s 63-49 victory at No. 19 Garden City on Saturday night.
The 6-foot-1, 221-pound back from Norton, broke a 45-year-old Blue Dragon record when he surpassed the great Mack Herron by rushing for 308 yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns. Herron went for 305 yards on 42 carries in 1967 against Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa.
Lane also caught six passes for 42 yards and two touchdowns to complete a night where he had a game-high 350 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns. Also the punter, Lane averaged 42 yards per boot on three punts.
Lane is the first Blue Dragon to earn NJCAA National Player of the Week honors since Jatavius Stewart was a special teams national recipient last season. He is the first offensive recipient since Chris Anderson in 2009 and he’s the seventh player to win the award in the Rion Rhoades era.
Lane enters this week’s game with Dodge City at Gowans Stadium as the nation’s leading rusher with 546 yards and a yard-per-carry of 6.8. Lane has three 100-yard games this season.
