Breaking a 45-year-old Hutchinson Community College football record on Saturday, sophomore running back Terrell Lane was named the Verizon/Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the week Tuesday morning.
Lane, a 6-foot-1, 221-pound running back from Norton, broke Mack Herron’s single-game rushing record, going for a staggering 308 yards as No. 14 Hutchinson out-gunned No. 19 Garden City 63-49 in an incredible offensive shootout on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Garden City.
Lane garnered his record 308 yards on just 29 carries (10.6 yards per carry). He had seven runs of 10 yards or more, including rushing touchdowns of 5, 64 and 59 yards.
But there was more to Lane’s performance than just running the ball. He was also a key figure in the passing game out of the backfield for quarterback Luke Barnes. Lane had career highs of six receptions for 42 yards and two receiving touchdowns of 2 and 19 yards.
Lane finished the night with a career-high 350 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns. Lane also averaged 42 yards per punt on three punts.
Lane is the third Blue Dragon this to earn weekly Jayhawk Conference honors, and is the second player to earn offensive honors.
Verizon and the Jayhawk Conference are in the third year of a partnership to honor the Jayhawk Conference’s weekly Players of the Week.
Lane is now eligible for NJCAA national player of the week. That award will be announced on Wednesday.
