On the power of two decisive victories to open the season, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team jumped six spots to No. 3 in the first regular-season NJCAA Division I poll of the season, released on Wednesday.

Starting No. 9 in the preseason poll, the Lady Dragons have defeated Neosho County 7-0 and Kansas City 15-0 in their first two games of the season. Hutchinson plays Cloud County at 5 p.m. today and will meet Independence at 3 p.m. on Friday to close out their four-game season-opening homestand.

The No. 3 ranking matches the highest ranking ever by the HCC women’s soccer team. Hutchinson climbed to and finished No. 3 in each of the past two seasons.

Brevard Community College just edged Tyler Junior College for the No. 1 spot in the first poll of the season. Both teams had two first-place votes each, but Brevard had 78 points to Tyler’s 77.

Hutchinson was followed by Iowa Western and Paradise Valley to round out the Top 5.

For what is believed to be the first time in conference history, the Jayhawk Conference has three teams ranked in the Top 10 of the national poll. Butler is 3-1 and is No. 9 this week. The Grizzlies fell four spots. Johnson County climbed seven spots to No. 10. The Cavaliers are 2-1.
