Backed by his second-straight game of scoring at least 10 points, Hutchinson Community College sophomore kicker Michael Mesh was named the Verizon/Jayhawk Conference Football Special Teams Player of the Week.
Mesh kicked four extra points and was 2 of 2 on field goals to score 10 of Hutchinson’s 34 points in a 54-34 loss at No. 12 Navarro on Saturday night in Corsicana, Texas. Last week against Coffeyville, Mesh scored a single-game career-high 16 points.
Mesh’s field goals were from 23 and a career-long 43 yards against the Bulldogs.
For the season, Mesh is now 11 of 11 on extra points and 5 of 5 on field goals through the first two games. In two games, Mesh surpassed his field goal total of four last season – Mesh was 4 of 7 in 2011.
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic product moved into HCC’s career top 10 for scoring with 111 points. He needs just four extra points to become the Blue Dragons’ career leader in that category.
Mesh is the second Blue Dragon in as many weeks to earn weekly league honors. Last week, quarterback Luke Barnes was the Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
This is the second time in Mesh's career that he has earned weekly league honors.
Verizon and the Jayhawk Conference are in the third year of a partnership to honor the Jayhawk Conference’s weekly Players of the Week.
Mesh is now eligible for NJCAA national player of the week. That award will be announced on Wednesday.
