
AUGUSTA – Freshman Ashlynn Lambert was the top Lady Dragon placer on Saturday during the Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country team’s season-opening meet, the Wichita State/J.K. Gold Classic at Raft Golf Course.
Hutchinson placed ninth with 230 points. The Lady Dragons were the fourth-best finishing junior college team behind Allen, Cowley and Colby.
Lambert paced the Lady Dragons individually with a 29th-place finish in a time of 16 minutes, 26.06 seconds. She was the fifth-best junior college runner in a field that included runners from Wichita State, Kansas State and Oklahoma Baptist.
Freshman Cecilia Lane finished 37th overall and ninth among junior college runners in a time of 16:37.71.
From there, the numbers dropped off for HCC.
Sophomore Diosha Johnson was 68th in 18:04.23. Freshman Melissa Miller was 76th in 18:37.49. Sophomore Taylor Sweet was 85th in 19:01.70 over the women’s 4K course.
Also running on Saturday for HCC, but not counting in the scoring total were sophomores Rebekah Sweet (90th, 19:55.60) and Shanna Prescott (96th, 20:08.48).
Wichita State won the University/College team title with 26 points. Kansas State was second with 33. Allen was the top junior college team and finished third overall with 103 points.
The Lady Dragons will have two weeks to prepare for their only home meet of the 2012 season, the Blue Dragon Invitational, which will be contested at the new Westar Energy/Prairie Ridge course in northeast Hutchinson. Race time on Sept. 15 in 10 a.m.
