ROSWELL, N.M. – Just about 11 hours after dropping a five-set heartbreaker, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team made the quick turnaround and upended the No. 11 team in the nation Saturday morning and in doing so, reached a program milestone.

Hutchinson upset No. 11 Seminole State 25-21, 25-16, 25-15 to open Day 2 of the fifth annual New Mexico Military Classic. The victory was the 900th of the Lady Dragon volleyball program which dates back to 1974.

The Lady Dragons followed that upset with another tough five-set loss to Odessa College, falling to the Wranglers 18-25, 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 13-15. Hutchinson finishes the tournament 2-2.

SEMINOLE STATE RECAP
This was Hutch’s first victory over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 10 San Jacinto in the ninth-place match of the 2009 NJCAA Tournament.

Against Seminole State, setters Scout Heizer and Ashlyn Westerman spread the wealth around and three different Lady Dragons led with six kills apiece.

Sophomore opposite Jade Nelson hit a team-high .370, while sophomore Shayne Haley hit .333 and freshman Teresa Wade hit. 180.

Heizer finished with 17 assists and Westerman added 13 assists. Libero Taylor Karcher had a team-high seven digs.

ODESSA RECAP
The Lady Dragons (2-2) jumped out to a 2-1 lead before falling in two close sets, losing 15-13 in the decisive fifth set. It was the second-straight five-set loss for Hutchinson in the tournament. Hutchinson is now 6-16 in five-set matches in the past two seasons.

Wade led the Lady Dragons offensively with 14 kills. Shayne Haley had a season-high 13 against the Wranglers. Middle blockers Gabby Ruston and Megan Heier had nine kills each.

Sophomore Ashlyn Westerman had a career-high 28 set assists. Scout Heizer had her first double-double of the season with 23 assists and a career-high 15 digs.

The Lady Dragons will have their 2012 home opener at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Colby at the Sports Arena.
