
NEWTON – Former Hutchinson Community College men’s golfer Ryley Haas won one match on Friday, but fell in the round of 16 at the 102nd Kansas Amateur Championship at Sand Creek Station in Newton.
Haas, who played at HCC in 2011 and 2012, defeated Wichita’s Michael Holloway 2 and 1 in the round of 32 on Friday morning. The eighth-seeded Haas was then eliminated by 24th seed Chris Gilbert 5 and 4 in the round of 16 later on Friday.
The Colby native who will attend the University of Kansas this fall, never trailed in his match against Holloway. Leading by two holes after nine, Haas won holes 13 and 14 with pars to build a three-hole lead. Holloway won the 15th and 16th holes to pull within one, but Haas closed the match out with a hole-winning par on No. 17 to advance to the Round of 16.
Haas dropped the first two holes on the Friday afternoon match to Gilbert. After the tough start, Haas won Nos. 4 and 8 and trailed by one at the turn. Gilbert then won Nos. 10, 11 and 12 to go up four holes and he closed out Haas on No. 14.
