NEWTON – Former Hutchinson Community College men’s golfer Ryley Haas earned his way into the second round of the 102nd Kansas Amateur on Thursday at Sand Creek Station.

While Haas narrowly advanced to the round of 32 on the final hole on Thursday, current Blue Dragon golfer Trey Hayden was eliminated in the opening round.

Haas, who is the eighth overall seed, defeated Josh Weems of Lake Quivira 1-up.

The Colby native who will attend the University of Kansas this fall, never trailed in the match. Haas won the third hole with a birdie and held that lead through the 17th hole. Haas led by two holes after No. 14, but Weems birdied Nos. 15 and 17 to win those two holes and tie the match up heading into the final hole of regulation.

On No. 18, Haas pared and won the hole as Weems posted a bogey.

Haas will tee off in the round of 32 at 7:48 a.m. against 40th seed Michael Holloway of Wichita. If Haas wins his second match, he will move on to play in the round of 16 on Friday afternoon.

Hayden, the Augusta product who was the 13th overall seed, was knocked off 2 and 1 by 52nd seed Zach Tate of Leawood.

The match was all square through nine holes and Hayden took a lead after a birdie on No. 10. But Hayden posted bogeys on Nos. 11, 13 and 14, losing all three holes, which gave Tate a two-hole lead.
