
NEWTON – There will be two Blue Dragons – one former and one current – in the field of 64 when the opening round of the 102nd Kansas Amateur begins on Thursday at Sand Creek Station in Newton.
Ryley Haas and Trey Hayden qualified as the No. 8 and 13 seed, respectively, after two days of stroke-play qualifying on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Haas, from Colby who graduated from HCC this past spring and will attend the University of Kansas this fall, completed a strong qualifying session with a 1-under 143, which tied for seventh. After shooting a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, Haas followed that up with an even-par 72 on Wednesday.
The second round was up and down for Haas, who shot even-par 36 on the front nine, having to offset two bogeys and a double bogey with four birdies. For his entire round, Haas had five birdies, nine pars, six bogeys and a double bogey.
Haas will play Lake Quivira’s Josh Weems in the opening round of qualifying with a 7:36 a.m. tee time on Thursday.
Hayden, from Augusta, shot a 1-under 71 on Wednesday to greatly improve his seeding for the field of 64. Going into the second round tied for 30th, Hayden finished qualifying tied for 13th at 1-over 145.
Hayden had five birdies, 10 pars, two bogeys and one double bogey.
He will face Zach Tate of Leawood in Thursday’s opening round with a tee time of 8:50 a.m.
The second and third rounds will be Friday with the quarterfinals and semfinals on Saturday and a 36-hole championship set for Sunday.
