For the third time in the Rion Rhoades era, the Hutchinson Community College football player has been named a Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year.

Sophomore receiver/return specialist Cordarrelle Patterson was named the Jayhawk Conference’s and Region VI’s 2011 Offensive Player of the Year on Monday. He was one of 17 Blue Dragons to earn All-Conference/All-Region VI postseason awards.

Patterson, a 6-foot-4, 211-pound sophomore from Rock Hill, S.C., is considered the top junior college prospect this season, joins LaDarrian Page and Eugene Kinlaw as winners of the Jayhawk’s Player of the Year Awards in the Rhoades era. Both Page and Kinlaw won their awards in 2008.

Patterson was named first team all-conference and all-region as a receiver and return specialist this season.

Patterson has re-wrote the Blue Dragon record book, now holding or sharing 10 career or single-season records.

Patterson has been used in a variety of ways to bolster the highest-scoring offense in Blue Dragon football history this season. Through 11 games, Patterson has caught 53 passes for 806 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns. His 53 receptions are tied for second on the single-season list, just one reception shy of tying Lonnie Crittendon’s team record of 54. His 806 receiving yards are fifth.

As a kick returner, Patterson averaged an NJCAA-best 51.8 yards per return average on 10 returns with three touchdowns. Patterson owns three of the top four all-time kickoff returns with TDs of 98, 97 and 96 yards in his career. He had two kickoff returns for touchdowns against Kilgore.

Patterson has also been a threat running the ball with 369 yards on just 28 carries (13.2 yards per rush) and six touchdowns.

Patterson has accounted for 1,686 yards of all-purpose offense and averaged 18.5 yards every time he touched the football. He broke 200 all-purpose yards three times this season.

The freshman All-American scored touchdowns in 10 of 11 games this season 21 touchdowns. That total and the 126 points scored tied two single-season records with the great Mack Herron (1966-67).

For his career, Patterson has a team-record 105 receptions for 1,714 yards, which his 34 yards shy of Crittendon’s career receiving yards record. He has a school-record 33 career touchdowns – Patterson has scored a TD in 19 of 22 games played – and has a team-record 198 points.

Patterson has returned a school-record six kicks (5 kickoffs, 1 punt) for touchdowns. He has the career record of 41.9 yards per kickoff return. Patterson also owns the team-record for career all-purpose yards with 3,251 (392 rushing, 1,714 receiving, 234 punt returns, 921 kickoff returns).

Patterson will have one more game as a Blue Dragon, which will be the Salt City Bowl on Dec. 3 at Gowans Stadium.

Jatavious Stewart (1st-team All-Conference; All-Region VI)
Stewart, a 5-11, 179-pound freshman receiver/returner from Rock Hill, S.C., was a big-play threat in his own right in 2011. Stewart has 42 receptions for 659 yards and 10 touchdowns. The 42 catches are the eighth most in a season by an HCC receiver. The 659 yards are ninth most.

Stewart had 24 rushes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He had 19 punt returns for an average of 16.4 yards per return with one touchdown and returned five kickoffs for an average of 25.4 yards per return.

Stewart accounted for 1,293 yards. He had a season-high nine catches against Garden City and a season-high 102 receiving yards against Fort Scott. Stewart also rushed for 110 yards on just six carries against Coffeyville.

Toby Johnson (1st-team All-Conference)
The 6-3, 296-pound defensive lineman from College Park, Ga., had 46 total tackles, including 16 unassisted stops in 2011. Johnson had 10 tackles for loss that totaled 40 yards. He had two quarterback sacks for 17 yards.

Johnson forced one fumble and recovered another. He had nine quarterback hurries and deflected five passes. Johnson also blocked two kicks, including one that was returned for the program’s first-ever defensive two-point conversion against Garden City.

Tim Edmond (1st-team All-Conference; All-Region VI)
Edmond was the team’s second-leading tackler this season with 84 total stops (50 unassisted). The 6-foot-, 236-pound freshman from Cincinnati had 8.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 quarterback sacks. He had four fumble recoveries and one interception.

Edmond was also a key figure on special teams, helping the Blue Dragons carry out two fake punts that went for first downs and eventually for touchdowns. He threw a pass from punt formation for a first down and ran for another.

Khambrel Garland (1st-team All-Conference; All-Region VI)
Garland, a 6-foot, 186-pound freshman from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., tied for the Blue Dragon team lead with three interceptions from his cornerback position and became a central figure in the defensive secondary when injuries took their toll on that position grouping.

Garland had three interceptions, including a 67-yard return for a touchdown against Highland. For the season, Garland had 31 tackles (23 unassisted). He also broke up nine passes and blocked one kick. His season high for tackles was six twice against Dodge City and Butler in the Region VI championship game.

Michael Mesh (1st-team All-Conference; All-Region VI)
The 5-8, 174-pound freshman kicker from Hutchinson Trinity was kept quite busy this season kicking extra points and kicking off for the most prolific offense in program history.

Mesh set a team record with 66 extra points in 72 attempts. He had a single-game school record 12 against Highland and had 10 against Independence. His 75 points scored are eighth most in a single season and is a single-season record of kickers. Mesh is 3 of 6 on field goals with a long of 36 yards.

Mesh has kicked off 87 times with nine touchbacks with opposing teams’ average starting field position at the 24 yards line.

Taylor Peak (2nd-team All-Conference; All-Region VI)
Peak is a two-year starter at center for the two highest-scoring offenses in team history. The 6-1, 286-pound sophomore from Girard, Kan., led a line for an offensive unit that averaged 48.3 points per game, 239 rushing yard per game and 210.5 passing yards per game.

The Dragons topped 600 yards twice, including 663 against Fort Scott, which is believed to be a modern-day team record. HCC rushed for 430 yards against the Greyhounds and topped the 300-yaard rushing mark five times in 11 games.

Deveon Dinwiddie (2nd-team All-Conference; All-Region VI)
The 5-8, 179-pound redshirt freshman from Hutchinson High, led the 2011 Blue Dragons in rushing with 807 yards on 138 carries and 11 touchdowns. His 90-yard run against Independence tied for the second-longest run from scrimmage in team history.

Dinwiddie had four games rushing for 100 or more yards, including a season-high 135 yards against Independence, which came on just six carries. He had 134 yards on 20 carries against Garden City.

Ben Bradley (2nd-team All-Conference)
Bradley, a 6-2, 311-pound freshman defensive end from Norcross, Ga., had 35 total tackles (11 unassisted), including 4.5 tackles for loss. He had one quarterback sack and five quarterback hurries with two passes broken up and one blocked extra point.

Bradley had a season-high nine tackles in the Region VI championship game against Butler.

Darious Stroud (2nd-team All-Conference)
Stroud, a 6-3, 227-pound sophomore linebacker from McDonough, Ga., was sixth on the team in tackles with 57 (37 unassisted), but led the 2011 Blue Dragons with 12.5 tackles for loss that totaled 41 yards. Stroud had 2.5 quarterback sacks and also recovered one fumble.

Stroud’s single-game high was 10 tackles, including four tackles for loss against Highland on Sept. 17,

Spencer Vanderbogart (2nd-team All-Conference)
The 6-1, 206-pound sophomore from Topeka, is a two-year starter who was fifth on the team in tackles and tied for first in interceptions.

Vanderbogart had 61 total tackles (33 unassisted) with four tackles for loss (24 yards). Vanderbogart intercepted three passes, including a 47-yard pick for a touchdown against Dodge City. Vanderbogart has four pass breakups this season.

Chris Hawkins (Honorable Mention All-Conference)
Hawkins was part of an offensive line that helped set a new NJCAA modern day scoring record when the Blue Dragon scored 90 points against Highland on Sept. 17.

The 6-4, 314-pound offensive guard from Florence, Ala, helped the Blue Dragons on that night produce 628 yards of total offense (327 rushing, 301 passing). The 2011 Blue Dragons scored 531 points, the most in Blue Dragon history.

Jonathan Brown (Honorable Mention All-Conference)
A 6-2, 292 freshman offensive tackle from Sylvester, GA blocked for a big-play offense that set a new record for points scored in a season.

Nineteen percent of Hutchinson’s 724 plays went or 10 or more yards. The Blue Dragons have had 41 scoring drives of five plays or less, 24 have been three plays or less and seven have been one-play scoring drives.

Elliott Alford (Honorable Mention All-Conference)
The 6-2, 198-pound sophomore quarterback from Bennettsville, Ga., owns or shares five career or season passing records and will go down as the most accurate passer in Blue Dragon history.

This season Alford has thrown for 2,220 yards (No. 3 in the single-season list), completing 160 of 247 passes for a season-record 64.8 percent. He’s thrown for a season-record 27 touchdown passes against only six interceptions. He is now second in season total offense with 2,571 yards.

For his career, Alford is the record holder in completion percentage at 62.1 percent (275 of 443). He has 3,740 passing yards, just 40 yards short of surpassing Robert Coates for that record. He is the career record holder in total offense at 4,406 yards and he has a career record 37 touchdown passes.

Tyler Rayl (Honorable Mention All-Conference)
Twice reaching double figures in tackles this season, the 6-5, 278-pound sophomore defensive end from Wellington had 48 tackles this season (15 unassisted). He had eight tackles for loss for 25 yards, including 1.5 quarterback sacks. He had two passes broken en.

Rayl had a season-high 11 tackles against Independence and 10 against Butler in the Region VI championship game.

Duane Sims (Honorable Mention All-Conference)
Sims is a two-year starter for the Blue Dragons in the defensive secondary. The 5-9, 170-pound freshman from Wichita, was the team leader in tackles with 92 tackles, including 56 unassisted. He tied for the team lead in interceptions with three, returning a 27-yard interception for a touchdown against Highland. Sims will also have the distinction of being the first Blue Dragon in team history to return a blocked extra point for a defensive two-point conversion that came against Garden City.

Sims broke double figures in tackles three times, including a career-high 16 against Fort Scott. He also had 12 against Dodge City and 11 against Coffeyville in the Region VI semifinals.

Kody Cook (Honorable Mention All-Conference)
The 6-1, 189-pound punter/receiver from Louisburg, led the Jayhawk Conference in punting this season with a 40.5 yard-per-punt average. His long was 59 with six punts of 50 or more yards. Cook had 18 punts downed inside the 20 yards line and only two touchbacks.

Cook also had 14 receptions for 150 yards and one touchdown.
