ALICE ARBUCKLE, FIRST HUTCH WOMEN’S BB COACH, DIES AT 87

The first women's basketball coach in Hutchinson Community College women's basketball history has died at age 87.

Alice "Bebe" Arbuckle died on Sunday, April 22 in Johnston Iowa.

An instructor at Hutchinson Community College from 1972 to 1975, Arbuckle was named the women's basketball program's first head coach. The women's basketball program's first year was the 1974-75 season.

Coaching for only one season, Arbuckle, led the Blue Dragons to a 9-4 season. The 1974-75 Blue Dragons advanced to the Region VI Tournament championship game. Arbuckle's first coaching victory was a 57-12 win over Allen County on January 15, 1975 at the Sports Arena.

Quoted in the Dragon's Tale Yearbook about the 1974-75 team, Arbuckle said "this team rapidly overcame their initial timidness and gained confidence in their play."

Arbuckle also coached at McPherson College and was an accomplished golfer, winning country club and city championships in Hutchinson and Mason City, Clear Lake and Boone, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Shawn McBratney, and a daughter-in-law, Kim Arbuckle. Alice is survived by: her children: Dana McBratney and husband Bruce of Johnston, David Arbuckle of Springfield, Missouri, and Jess Arbuckle and wife Michelle of Denver, Colorado; two brothers, Bob Fisher of Boone and David Fisher and wife Dorie of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Lindy, Morgan, Madison, Charlie, Jeni, and Sam, and four great grandchildren.
